Purchase Information
Notebook computers become available for purchase when the two year lease expires. Northern Michigan University receives notebook computers every year creating a purchase period annually. The purchase price is negotiated between NMU and the vendor and passed on to the purchaser. LIMIT of one (1) notebook per person.
- Purchase procedures will be sent via NMU email in March. Students that do not purchase the computer will need to return the computer by the May deadline date stated in the purchase email. Students that do not purchase the computer and are registered for credit earning NMU fall classes by the May deadline date may continue to use the computer.

Eligible purchasers will be notified via their NMU email account with purchase procedures.
To be eligible to purchase:
- NMU student must be a participant in the TLC program and have an end of lease computer issued to them.
- TLC participants that have the 2008 model computer and will be graduating during the purchase period are also eligible to purchase a computer. The graduating student will need to exchange the newer computer for one of the end of lease models.
- If the Help Desk or a technician installed software for a class, the computer MUST be brought to the Help Desk during business hours to have the software removed. Software removal must be done before students are eligible to purchase the computer. PLEASE REMEMBER TO SAVE YOUR FILES.
All computer purchases will be processed using the on-line purchase web site. Payment may be made by check (checking account number and the bank’s routing number is needed) or credit card (Discover, MasterCard or VISA).
To purchase the computer using the on-line purchase site, the following will be required:
- The serial number of the computer that is being purchased.
- NMU user ID & password
Cash payment will only be accepted for those purchasers that do not have a credit card or checking account. Please follow the "Paying Cash" procedure below.
Continuing students that purchase the computer will be issued a replacement computer before the start of the following semester. The ACS web site will have distribution dates and times approximately two weeks before distribution.
Due to software licensing limitations, the hard drives of ALL notebooks will be re-imaged. Make sure that you no longer need the software on the computer for any of your classes before the computer is brought to the Help Desk. OEM Software List Please allow 2 hours for the re-imaging of the MacBook.

All computers that are purchased will be sold AS IS. A warranty WILL NOT be provided.
Purchase notebook computer using the online purchase site
Please bring the computer to Micro Repair, located in LRC 114 to obtain a form that will enable you to purchase the computer with cash. Micro Repair will hold the computer while payment is made at the Student Service Center. Proof of payment must be provided to Micro Repair along with a signed purchase agreement to finalize the purchase.
If you are graduating in May 2009 and want to purchase a computer but have the 2008 model issued, ThinkPad R61 or Apple MacBook, please do the following:
- Save your files and return the 2008 model to Micro Repair, located in LRC 114 on or before the return deadline date of Tuesday, May 5, 2009. A 2007 model computer will be issued to you.
- Make payment using the online purchase web site at: https://notebook.nmu.edu. The purchase site will be opened March 30, 2009. May 5,2009 is the last day to exchange and pay for the computer.
Registered for Fall 2009 classes by May 5, 2009: You are eligible to continue to use the computer that is issued to you.
I'm not registered or planning to register for the Fall 2009 semester classes by Tuesday, May 5, 2009. The computer must be returned to Micro Repair no later than Tuesday, May 5, 2009 if you will NOT be returning to NMU. Late fees will begin on Wednesday May 6, 2009. The computer must be returned no later than Tuesday, May 5, 2009.
Any financial, advisor or other holds on your student record preventing you from registering must be taken care of before May 5, 2009 so that you are eligible to register for classes. The holds on your student record do NOT exempt you from the return deadline date. The computer must be returned no later than Tuesday, May 5, 2009.
PLEASE NOTE: If you are registered for Fall 2009 semester classes and cancel all classes BEFORE the semester begins, indicating that you will NOT return to NMU. The computer must be returned within 7 days from the date that the classes were canceled.
Computers can be returned to Micro Repair during business hours or NMU Public Safety, 24/7. Computers can be shipped UPS or FEDEX and should be insured for $1500.
