Podcasting is a technology that allows users to subscribe and listen to audio and video feeds. It is different from traditional online media in that it allows software to automatically detect new files and download them. For more information on podcasting consult Wikipedia
Do I need an iPod?
You do not need an iPod to download and listen to a podcast. You computer can be used to download the podcast using either iTunes, Juice, or any other RSS aggregator.
How do I listen to a podcast using iTunes?

To utilize one of the NMU podcasts please follow these steps:
- Download iTunes
- Go to the Northern Michigan University Podcast Homepage
- Download iTunes by clicking the Get iTunes button located in the bottom right corner of the website.
- Select the iTunes-Free button from the Apple website.
- When asked to run or save the file, click Run
- Next you will be asked if you want to run this software, click Run
- When asked to Accept the terms of the License Agreement click the checkbox that says I accept Terms of License Agreement then click Next.
- When asked for Setup Type, uncheck Use iTunes as the default player for audio files and Use QuickTime as the default player for media files
- Keep clicking next until you get to the Finish button.
- Click Finish
- Retrieving the Podcast
- Go to the Northern Michigan University Podcast Homepage
- Select the Podcast you would like to subscribe to i.e. Sonderegger Symposium
- You will then be brought to a new website listing the sections of the Podcast
- Click on the Subscribe in iTunes button located in the lower left hand corner of the website.
- Follow the onscreen instructions by clicking the Agree button.
- Continue clicking Next until you get to the Finish button
- iTunes will now automatically open and download the selected Podcast
- You can locate your Podcast by clicking the Podcast link from the menu inside of iTunes as shown.
- Play the Podcast by clicking on the file and then clicking the Play button
- To view or listen to multiple sections of a Podcast, click on the down arrow located to the left of the Podcast name.
- Once the Podcast menu expands, click the GET button next to the section of the Podcast you wish to listen to.
- The new section of the Podcast will now download.
- Once the Podcast is done downloading, it will no longer be grayed out and can be listened to
- To listen to the newly downloaded Podcast, simply click the file and then click Play
